My journey in photography has always been about capturing those subtle, powerful moments that often go unnoticed. With a background rooted in fine arts and years of experience behind the camera, I’ve honed a skill for revealing the hidden beauty in everything from urban textures to nature’s intricacies.

Macro photography became a natural extension of this vision—an opportunity to take my eye for detail to an entirely new level. In the world of cannabis photography, capturing every crystal-like trichome and intricate resin gland requires both artistic precision and a powerful set of tools.

Here’s a breakdown of the gear I use to achieve those ultra-close, ultra-sharp shots that showcase the extraordinary in the seemingly ordinary.

1. Macro Lenses: Power in Precision

My macro kit includes three specialized lenses, each serving a unique role:

  • Laowa f2.8 100mm 2x – A versatile choice with 2x magnification, ideal for detailed close-ups that fill the frame.

  • Laowa f2.8 25mm 2.5-5x – A manual lens designed for extreme close-up work, offering magnification from 2.5x to 5x, perfect for capturing intricate details like the individual trichomes on a cannabis bud.

  • Sony G-Master f2.8 90mm 1x – With 1:1 magnification and auto-focus, this lens is incredibly reliable, capturing clean, sharp images while providing flexibility in the field.

Combined with my Sony a7R V 61 MP professional camera, these lenses create exceptional macro images. The high magnification power of these lenses, paired with the camera’s incredible resolving power, allows me to capture even the tiniest details with absolute clarity.

The a7R V’s 61 MP sensor reveals textures, colors, and structures in a way that standard setups simply can’t match, especially under demanding conditions in a grow facility.

2. Portable Lighting: Godox AD200 Pro with Collapsible Softboxes

Lighting is a defining factor in macro photography. For controlled, portable lighting, I use Godox AD200 Pro flashes paired with collapsible softboxes. This setup provides just the right diffusion and intensity, illuminating each subject without overpowering the finer textures. In grow rooms, where lighting is often harsh and unpredictable, the Godox flash and softbox combination ensures I capture every trichome and texture with a natural, balanced light.

3. Focus Stacking Software: Helicon Focus

In macro photography, the shallow depth of field means focus stacking is essential. I rely on Helicon Focus to combine multiple images taken at different focus points, creating one sharp, detailed composite.

This software is indispensable for high-resolution work, and I was honored to have one of my images featured by Helicon Focus on Instagram—a nod to the power of this tool in professional macro photography.

When working with high-definition subjects, especially in cannabis photography where every resin gland and pistil needs to be sharp,

Helicon Focus is a game-changer. It lets me produce fully detailed images that meet the high standards clients expect.

4. Tripod and Focusing Rail: Fotopro Carbon Fiber Tripod & WeMacro Rail

A stable tripod is crucial in macro work, and my Fotopro Carbon Fiber Tripod is both lightweight (just 2.3 lbs) and reliable.

It’s easy to carry around for on-location shoots, yet sturdy enough to support my setup. Paired with a WeMacro focusing rail, this tripod setup allows me to make precise, incremental adjustments without disturbing the shot.

In high-magnification work, even the slightest movement can disrupt focus. The WeMacro rail provides that precision, allowing me to capture the exact focus point on each subject—an essential tool for bringing out every fine detail.

5. Remote Shutter Release: Sony RMT-P1BT Wireless Remote Commander

For capturing ultra-sharp macro images, I use the Sony RMT-P1BT Wireless Remote Commander. This remote shutter release eliminates any potential camera shake from pressing the shutter button manually, which is critical in high-magnification shots. With the Sony a7R V’s 61 MP sensor, any slight movement can impact clarity, so using a wireless remote keeps my shots as crisp and stable as possible.
