Telling the Story of Maryland: Capturing a Dispensary’s Tale Through My Lens

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to photograph the grand opening of Story of Maryland's Hyattsville dispensary. This assignment involved capturing interior and exterior shots, staff portraits, and producing a short video for social media.


The experience not only showcased the dispensary's unique aesthetic but also highlighted the evolving narrative of Maryland's cannabis industry.

Setting the Scene


Located at 2486 Chillum Road, near the bustling Shops at Queens Chillum, Story of Maryland – Hyattsville Dispensary stands as a beacon for both medical and recreational cannabis users.


The interior design immediately caught my eye—minimal yet striking, with unfinished black ceilings, bold red typography, dark wood cabinets, and semi-finished cement floors.

Capturing the Essence


Photographing the Story of Maryland – Hyattsville Dispensary was an exercise in storytelling through visuals. The exterior shots aimed to encapsulate the dispensary's modern façade, blending seamlessly into the urban landscape.

Staff portraits were particularly engaging. Each team member exuded passion and knowledge about cannabis, and my goal was to reflect their dedication and approachability.

These images were intended to humanize the brand, offering potential customers a glimpse into the friendly faces ready to assist them.


The short video produced for social media aimed to provide a dynamic overview of the dispensary. Through a series of quick cuts and engaging visuals, we highlighted the product range, the inviting interior, and the enthusiastic staff.


The video served as a digital handshake, introducing Story of Maryland – Hyattsville to the online community.

The Irony of Storytelling Through Photos


As a photographer, my mission is to uncover subtle, powerful moments that often go unnoticed. Capturing the grand opening of a dispensary named "Story" added a layer of irony to my work.



Here I was, using visual storytelling to narrate the inception of a place dedicated to personal cannabis stories. It was a meta-experience—telling the story of "Story" through my lens.
